Hot Air Balloons in Medora | Video
Andrew Keller
9/5/2008
Dropping temperatures prove that fall is just around the corner and with fall, the Medora musical and the pitchfork fondue will be suspended until spring. But a successful summer can`t be celebrated without balloons. Even really big balloons.

For the past three months, Job Christianson`s voice has been soaring over the Badlands, but the celebration is nearly over.

"We`re winding down the summer, it`s been a good summer in Medora, we`re winding it down right now, the Musical ends Saturday night, so the folks have one more time to see the musical," says Jim Fuglie of the T.R. Medora Foundation.

What better way to go out than with balloons.

Friday morning, at a quarter to six, the first celebratory balloon was blown up for the Medora Musical finale....with many more planned for this weekend.

"The launches on Saturday morning and Saturday afternoon, Sunday morning are going to be pretty spectacular, there will be seven hot air balloons launching from Medora at daylight on Saturday and Sunday mornings, and about 6 on Saturday afternoon," says Fuglie.

Colin Graham brought his hot air balloon from Colorado and says North Dakota beauty can`t be matched.

"This is one of the most beautiful areas in the country to fly a balloon, it`s just absolutely stunning," says Colin Graham.

As we all know, North Dakota winds can change at any time, and being a balloon in the air, they don`t have control of where they end up, but Graham says that`s half the adventure.

"Never know where you are going to go. We ended up going about six miles from Medora," Graham says. "It`s so calm, so still, so peaceful."

He encourages everybody to come out and celebrate the final summer days of Medora.

The balloons will take off three separate times this weekend. Around 6 in the morning on both Saturday and Sunday, and 6 at night on Saturday night.
