With more than 500 properties to look over, Manny Hanson stays busy as head of maintenance for First Minot Management.
"We probably have 30 or so in the basements," says Hanson.
Hanson is talking about a sump pump. He has to maintain the grounds of his tenants and that means making sure they are dry.
"We did have one this morning that the sewer was clogged so we had to fix that," says Hanson.
Hanson says sump pumps are necessary to prevent flooding.
"Sump pumps take water from below basement and pumps it out. If you haven`t cleaned it out. It`s a good idea to clean it out," says Jim Heckman, Director of Environmental Services, First District Health Unit.
For those who don`t have landlords looking over their property, you can head down to the hardware store and find a variety of pumps.
"There`s plenty of sump pumps and different pumps. It depends how much water you`re going to have," says Mitch Kraft, Acme Tool Krib
Kraft says a sump pump can range from $100 to a few hundred dollars.
"We`ve ran out of pumps twice and we have ran out of hose," says Kraft.
You could think of a sump pump as an insurance policy. It won`t do anything until your home is in trouble, and then it kicks into gear.
