Hats Off to Young Donors | Video

During the recent flood, volunteers of all ages found ways to help. The flooding might be over, but one school is still encouraging their students to donate.

Third graders Tya Schiele, Jade Koski, and Tara Binstock spent their morning going from classroom to classroom at Wing School, collecting money to help North Dakota flood victims.

Each of the girls had a personal connection to the flooding.

"I actually found out that my aunt and uncle had to leave their home because of all the flooding on the road, so I thought of doing it to help out with the flooding, so that people can get back in their house," says Koski.

The idea to collect money came during reading class.

"We were reading one of our books and our teacher started talking about how she used to help a zoo, and I sort of came up with the idea for helping the floods and donating money to the Red Cross," says Schiele.

And as an added bonus, the principal allowed students who donated money to wear their favorite hats to school all week.

"It was a good way for us to get some money for the flood victims and have some fun with it," says Camie Zenker, the third-grade teacher.

Mrs. Zenker says she was surprised to see her students take such an interest in helping others.

"I think that`s really awesome that they start that out in third grade, and that they had the idea, that I didn`t, that they started it, so I think that`s very inspirational," she says.

In total, the girls collected $225 to donate to the Red Cross. They say they`re just happy they could do something to help.

"It feels pretty good because now we can really help the floods," says Schiele.

And they encourage other students to do the same thing.

"I would say you can do it like we did it, so you can do it," says Binstock.

Mrs. Zekner says that an additional benefit of the fundraiser was that the students got to practice their counting, and their money skills.
