Sandbagging Efforts Continue | Video
4/3/2009
As city and county officials address flooding concerns community volunteers are doing their part.

The Burlington Fire Hall is one of two locations in the county where volunteers are filling sandbags. The county hopes to stockpile about 50,000 bags to use in the event of flooding. Between volunteers here at the firehouse and at the state fair center, more than 53,000 bags have been filled. Volunteers are still very much needed though.

"Just come out and help even if it is for an hour. You don`t have to be strong. We need people to tie bags even. And just hold bags while they fill sand," says Ryan Schwandt a volunteer supervisor.

Students from Burlington Elementary School were out doing their part today too. Nearly 50 4th graders were shoveling, tying, and carrying bags to palettes. Hard work...but these youngsters were up to the task.

"I thought it would be a good opportunity for the kids to get out and volunteer in the community a bit and see what it is like to actively fight a flood like we have going on now," says Burlington Elementary Teacher Aaron Loff.

There is still an opportunity to fill bags. Volunteers will be out at the Burlington Fire Hall and State Fair Center on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.
