It is hard to get motivated about flooding when the river is frozen but we will have a challenge ahead of us...that is the message today from city and county officials.
There is new information that has many nervous of the potential for flooding in the area.
On April 3rd, at a community press conference, community leaders laid out their plans and progress for the flood flight. The city will be examining dikes along the river, that means homeowners with fences and other obstructions on the dikes will need take those down. The city will also be filling in low spots. In the coming weeks, there will be daily meetings between local, state and national water experts. Also, the National Guard is prepared to help in a flood event. Still, concern is growing as new information is released.
"We found out today, that the volume of water that`s going to be coming through from Saskatchewan is about twice the size we thought before," says Curt Zimbelman, Mayor of Minot.
City officials say even with the extra water, Minot shouldn`t see any major flooding. The 5,000 cubic feet per second of water expected to come through the city still would leave the water about four feet below the tops of the dikes. |
