Predicting the Red River Crest | Video
Neil Carlson
4/6/2009
How high will the Red River go during its second crest?

It`s a number still being debated.

Right now, we`re hearing a lot of different forecasts and predictions about how high the Red River will get on its second crest.

Jason Lambrecht, of the US Geological Survey says at this point, many of the gauges they use to monitor runoff are still frozen in ice.

So, they don`t have accurate numbers yet.

Numbers they provide to the weather service for its computer generated river forecast.

"Certainly, once the actual movement of water begins in the upper Sheyenne Basin, that`s really going to go a long way to allow us to improve the accuracy of the forecast. Currently its still based in part on the historical data," says Mark Ewens, of the National Weather Service.

And what has forecasters nervous is the current incomplete date, like this satellite photo of the Sheyenne river basin, taken today.

"We`ve very concerned will all of the snow that`s still in the upper Sheyenne and the Red Lake basin down to the south," says Ewens. "Yes, and especially once we get farther into April, and of course into May, we`re getting into the time of the month where thunderstorms even become a possibility as we get further into April."

But at this point, it appears we`ll just have to wait and see what happens and what is forecast, on the temperature heats up.

The current Red River forecast calls for the possibility of even higher levels during the river`s second crest at Fargo and Grand Forks.
