Minot Residents Should Be Protected from Flooding | Video
4/8/2009
Flood preparations are in full swing around the region. Downstream from Minot to Velva and upstream all the way to Foxholm and Carpio, volunteers and city and county officials are working to make sure we are prepared for flooding.

The National Weather Service has predicted some major flooding for parts of our viewing area.

The city of Burlington has declared a flood disaster, Foxholm residents have sandbagged nearly their entire town and Minot is filling in gaps along their levees.

These flood predictions are serious and officials are taking them seriously.

On April 8th, city and county leaders gathered at a community press conference. Their message was be vigilant. That includes residents in flood plains and those in low lying areas. According to the National Weather Service Minot will receive about 5,000 cubic feet per second of water for about three weeks. The crest should occur on April 15th. Luckily, Minot`s levees and dikes are prepared to take on 7,000 cubic feet per second and that still puts the water four feet below the top. Still, other areas of the county are not going to be so lucky.

"Residents in low lying areas and in flood plains should be prepared and aware. This is not just a river flood event, it is a runoff event too," says Bruce Christianson the Ward County Commission Chairman.

Lake Darling releases will not occur until after local runoff has drained. Contractors are standing by to break up ice jams if needed. But for many, sandbags will be their saving grace.
