Burlington Resident Prepares for Water | Video
4/13/2009
Burlington could begin flooding as early as Sunday and with time running out preparation has hit high gear.

Residents and volunteers in Burlington filled over 360 pallets of sandbags.

They are needed to build a dike that is expected to flood as early as Sunday.

Residents have begun preparing for nearly a week.

"I took the day off yesterday just to get started on the basement," says Burlington Resident Merry Theilen.

Theilen and her family have been preparing for the possibility of a flood for a few days.

Ripping up carpet and bringing as much furniture as possible up to the living room has been time consuming.

"We`ve got two bedrooms down there and my son`s a musician so he has a lot of band equipment down there that we`ve been hauling out for two days that we don`t want ruined," says Theilen.

With the Theilens being stuck inside preparing for the worst, volunteers from all over have stepped up to lend a helping hand outside.

"It`s great if we had to do it all ourselves it wouldn`t get done," says Tony Theilen.

The channel behind the Theilens house is usually dry.

Its a back-up channel in case the Souris or Des Lacs rivers overflow.

"We`ve been here since 1982 and its been dry since then," says Tony.

With both rivers expected to flood in the next few days volunteers are working as quick as they can.

"We`re just thinking better safe than sorry," says Merry..

"Oh yeah its worth it. We needed to kind of reorganize some things downstairs anyways," says Tony.

The Theilens thank everyone from the city of Burlington and all the volunteers who have come out and helped with the sandbagging effort.
