Residents just east of Minot are cleaning up after water flooded their homes last night and their battle isn`t over yet.
The homes lie in the path of three coulees that run through Minot, the Larson One and Two and the Puppy-Dog. Last night, all that water invaded the neighborhood.
"They are saying it will happen again this evening. We are going to get some more sandbags and move them higher and closer to the home," says Paul Zaharia.
Zaharia built a dirt dike to protect his home. But the water was too much for his levee and his home was swamped.
"We had four and a half inches of water in the garage, and it came up under the carpet and so we are bringing in the sandbags," says Zaharia.
The water that drains from the coulees is supposed to make its way to the river and it is, but not quickly enough.
Instead of flowing through culverts, it is running over roads and creating lakes. KOA campground is in its path and so is Bill Bonebrake`s home. He was here in 2005 when record rainfall filled the coulees. While he expected something like this to happen, he didn`t think it would be this bad.
"What I have heard is it is coming back, perhaps even stronger. Last night it went over the highway. That helped actually carry it out of here," says Bonebrake.
Bonebreak and his neighbors are preparing for another coulee crest this evening. Officials say all the water will eventually drain, but it will be too late for this neighborhood. |
