The town of Sawyer is built in a valley. With plenty of water coming in from the hills, it`s an easy target to flood.
Last night, officials came up with a plan to keep the town dry.
The town has seen a lot of water, but only a few homes have been affected. To make sure the town keeps dry, the city started building a dike last night and worked on it until around 3 a.m. Wednesday morning.
"We were planning ahead. If the river was to rise or if it does rise in the next few weeks, we would need to have a dike. So that`s why we did what we did," says Cy Kotaska, Velva Mayor.
The mayor says that everything has been pretty dry in town and a lot of it is thanks to the volunteers and students who helped sandbag the past couple of days. |
