As the flooding threat continues to dwindle throughout most of the state, there are still areas under high alert. Over the weekend, Medora was watching the Little Missouri closely as it continued to rise.
The Little Missouri River wasn`t so little this weekend, putting those in Medora at high alert.
"About on Thursday the project for the river showed it was going to be in flood stage," says Billings County Emergency Manager Pat Rummel.
And flood stage is 15 feet. But Rummel says early projections by the USGS had the river rising up to 17 feet. And that`s the town declared a flood emergency. Sandbags and dirt were rushed in.
"Friday and Saturday we were kind of worried about it because it was rising about an inch an hour so it was definitely a concern," says Rummel.
And as expected, the river ended up cresting Sunday at just over 16 feet. USGS officials are in Medora monitoring the river.
"We`ve found that it`s going down, it`s gone down a couple tenths since this morning, it should continue on dropping, we were down at Marmarth on Saturday and it dropped a foot and a half since then, so hopefully it will continue to drop here," says USGS hydrologist Dennis Rosenkranz.
Even though the river never spilled over into town, it`s still causing some headaches just East of town, headaches that this town doesn`t need.
The Bully Pulpit golf course crew had just cleared the damage from the March flood hoping to have the course opened by Friday, and then it happened again.
"Well, it started to come back up and totally engulfed everything that was flooded with even more water," says Bully Pulpit director of golf operations David Solga.
He says revenues were lost in March. Now, April is adding up too as crews clean up debris left on the course. All he needs now is a little dry weather so he can get the course back open for the season.
Solga says he hopes to have the course ready for play by next week.
