An attempt to revive a bill that expands eligibility for a child health insurance program has been defeated in the North Dakota House.
Last week House members voted 47-41 to reject the plan. On Monday they defeated a request to reconsider the bill.
The measure says a family with an income of 200 percent of the federal poverty level can qualify for child coverage. Right now the standard is 150 percent.
Hurdsfield Rep. Robin Weisz says North Dakota families can deduct taxes, child support payments and child care expenses when they`re figuring whether they qualify.
Weisz says the change could give free health insurance to families making more than $70,000 a year.
Fullerton Rep. Jerry Kelsh says the change is justified because it would help more children get preventive health care.
Fargo Rep. Jasper Schneider says the change is justified because it would help more children get preventive health care.
Kelsh says health insurance is harder to get for everyone because it is increasingly more expensive.
The bill is HB1478. |
