Cleaning Up Lake Tschida | Video
Retha Colclasure
5/1/2009
Few people live at Lake Tschida in Grant County year round, but it`s a popular recreation area when the weather is favorable.

Unfortunately, it`s a long way from being ready for visitors this season.

Floods covered much of the campground with debris and garbage.

Some students who are doing their part to clean it up.

Water from Lake Tschida pushed around branches, garbage, and anything else in its way when it rose this spring.

"The dam functioned just like the dam was supposed to function," says David Herr, the facilities supervisor. "It absorbed the high inflows, held them here, let it out slowly."

But while the water was held back, it did a lot of damage.

"Of course when we back all this water up, when people are recreating and we have our trailer and cabin areas, it can push water onto them," Herr says.

Which it did, along with the campground areas.

"It`s a lot of cleanup," says Herr.

So the Bureau of Reclamation teamed up with eager volunteers from the Glen Ullin school, who gave their time, and got out of class to help.

"I came out here because my family comes out here in the summer and this lake means a lot to us and I don`t like it when its really messy," Stephanie Kilde a senior at Glen Ullin, says.

She, along with nearly two dozen other students, spent the whole day picking up sticks and clearing out trash.

"We had seen what happened down here while it was happening and we knew it was going to be a mess afterwards," says Ethan Schriado, a Glen Ullin senior.

He says he figured he could do his part to help out.

One thing that needs to be replaced after this winter is picnic tables. The Bureau of Reclamation is hoping these high school students can put together at least a dozen.

"People like coming out here and it`s a nice place to bes" says Schriado.

These students say they`re glad they can lend a hand, and proud of what they`ve been able to do.

The Bureau of Reclamation originally talked to the students about planting trees.

But after the flood hit, they decided to clean up instead.

It`s the first time the Bureau has teamed up with the school, but leaders say they hope to make it an annual event.
