After three decades of delivering musical melodies in Mott, Mark Suelzle decided it`s time to hang it up.
"Thirty-two years I`ve been teaching, 32 years at this school," he says.
Suelzle has helped shape and devise the music department at Mott-Regent high school.
"He can make any kid play anything, or sing the right notes, it`s just unbelievable, I don`t know how he does it," says one of his music students, senior Kelsey Friedt.
"He`s just that talented, he`s got a gift, I guess, I don`t know what it is," remarks senior Val Jahner.
Suelzle began teaching in 1978, and as the years went on. Many Mott-Regent musicals, like the well-known Café Concert, are said to be extraordinary.
"It is hard, but it`s bittersweet because after 32 years. It`s work, a lot of work, but it`s something I enjoy doing, and it`s a lot of fun," Suelzle says.
To give you an idea of the students` respect to Mr. Suelzle`s music teaching abilities, 61 out of the 79 Mott-Regent High School students were in band class.
"You can`t go without saying that Mark doesn`t have that type of an impact on kids when you have that type of participation in his program," says Mott-Regent Principal Dave Libis.
"The kids, they respect him, it`s just all that respect we have for him, I don`t know, it`s just, we love coming here and having him teach us," Jahner says.
"Friends, that`s the hardest part, I`ve made a lot of friends here, and I don`t know why it`s sad, but it just is, after 32 years," says saddened Suelzle.
For the millions of notes sang throughout the course of his career and the countless concerts performed, Mott-Regent High School will never forget the invigorating way Mark Suelzle has been able to bring the best out of his students.
Suelzle says he`s not sure where his future will take him, however he does have a job offer that he wouldn`t share. As far as filling the vacancy in Mott-Regent High School, Libis says they`re in the interview process.
