On The Farm: Spring Seeding Progressing | Video
5/27/2009
Small streams still run all over North Dakota as the extra water searches for a spot to rest. Potholes are full after three-quarters of an inch of rain fell a few days ago west of Deering.

"We probably have three or four more dry ones left, then we have two fields that are pretty wet,” says Greg Simonson, Ward County Farmer.

It`s been a late spring for most farmers as they make the final push to get their crops in. Wednesday, Simonson and his brother were trying to seed wheat.

"We were going to seed peas but those fields were really wet so we had to forget about that and then at the end we might finish up with flax and sunflowers,” says Simonson.

That`s because they didn`t start seeding until May 10th. Simonson has been farming for 44 years and this is the wettest he has ever seen it.

"I was amazed that we`d ever get what we are getting in,” says Simonson.

It`s not the latest he`s ever seeded though. Back in 1974 he didn`t start seeding till June 1st.

"And we finished on June 13th. June 13th was late for seeding wheat but we got it in and it matured and it was a fare crop."

The Simonson`s were able to get their barley in but it`s been more time consuming since they have to search for dry land. The air seeder was sitting and waiting this morning while Greg operates the cultivator trying to dry out a piece of land.

"We`re seeding wheat on a field that has a good slope on it and I`ll work ahead of the air seeder. Hopefully we`ll get it seeded yet today."
