New ND Lake Filling Fast
6/19/2009
Heavy rain caused problems this week in Bismarck and Mandan but brought at least one benefit: Harmon Lake is opening ahead of schedule.
The Harmon Lake Dam Recreation Area north of Mandan was finished about a year ago. Its main purpose is flood control, but the lake also will be a scenic summer recreation area.

The lake is about 145 acres and 38 feet deep. It`s been filling for about a year, but most people thought it would need at twice that amount of time.

Morton County Park Director Vern Davis says that with the huge amount of snow and runoff, the lake filled in about a week in April. Now it`s being opened for fishing and camping, though trails, shelters and playgrounds are not finished. The Morton County Park Board will run the recreation area.
