Jurors in Las Vegas have heard from an off-duty North Dakota Army Reservist who tackled and disarmed a gunman whose pistol jammed after 16 shots in a Las Vegas Strip casino two years ago.
Justin Lampert testified today that Steven Francis Zegrean threatened to kill him as Lampert ran toward the gunman on a mezzanine of the New York-New York casino in July 2007. The 26-year-old Lampert says he was "too far engaged" to back off. He told jurors he believed it was him or the gunman as they tangled before other tourists helped subdue Zegrean.
Lampert is a native of Crosby, in northwestern North Dakota, and a North Dakota State University student. He was in Las Vegas for a friend`s bachelor party when the shooting happened.
The 53-year-old Zegrean, an unemployed house painter, has pleaded not guilty to 52 felony charges in the shooting that left four wounded. A woman was also hurt trying to flee the gunfire. |
