ND Grad Student Studying Wind Farms and Ducks
7/13/2009
A University of North Dakota graduate student is doing research on the impact of wind farms on nesting ducks.

Tanner Gue is looking at wind farm sites near Kulm, in the southeastern part of the state near the South Dakota border. The two-year project is a cooperative venture involving the Fish and Wildlife Service, Ducks Unlimited, the North Dakota Game and Fish Department, UND and the Prairie Pothole Joint Venture.

Gue and five student technicians trapped nearly 200 female ducks this spring and fitted them with transmitters to monitor their movements. About half the hens were nesting on wind farm sites, and the other half on "control" sites away from wind towers.

Gue says that so far, no duck deaths have been found from collisions with wind towers. But he says it`s still too early in the research to draw any conclusions.
