Montana-Dakota Utilities has begun using a new energy source.
The small power plant near Glen Ullin uses waste heat from a compressor that is part of the Northern Border Pipeline company`s natural gas pipeline and turns it into electricity.
MDU says it will produce enough energy to provide power to about 5,000 customers.
The company says during the national conversation on renewable energy, this will help make MDU part of the conversation.
"As you move towards some newer technology to reduce those emissions, which we think is a prudent approach to do it as the technology comes on board to be able to do that, but this is another step that you can have some alternative forms to produce more electricity, too," says Mark Hanson, of MDU.
North Dakota`s Public Service Commission approved the project last year, saying it was a good new potential energy source.
