With temps well into the 80`s by 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 12th, Dad was trying to stay cool swathing his canola early.
The canola seeded May 5th was the earliest crop on the Dreyer farm this year. Dad was even showing off his newly painted and rebuilt 4020 John Deere tractor.
"Yah, it`s a fresh engine and a paint job,” says Orlan Dreyer, Willow City Farmer.
You could say Dad has been showing off quite a bit lately. After his joking comments about Al Gore hit the national press...and I stress joking, he says he might need an agent.
"If there`s anyone that wants to represent me, I`m willing to talk,” says Dreyer.
Dad hasn`t made it to Hollywood yet, so he`ll have to settle for another year of harvesting in North Dakota and he likes what he sees so far.
"Everything emerged, it was never stressed, it was cool, so if we can`t raise a good canola crop in these conditions, we never will."
As for my 100 acres of wheat, the crop is still very green. A cool summer with plenty of rain has not stressed the crop at all. In fact, Wednesday was only the third day this crop has seen 90 degrees all year.
"I think the results may be pretty good, small grains like cool weather,” says Dreyer.
Some early barley in Bottineau County has been harvested and reports from the local elevator say it`s running great and the test weight is high.
