A coalition of environmental groups has filed a lawsuit challenging a U.S. State Department permit that allows an oil pipeline to be built through North Dakota and two other states.
Enbridge Inc. already has started construction on the Alberta Clipper pipeline, which will bring crude oil to the U.S. from Canada`s oil sands.
The pipeline will run between Superior, Wisconsin, and Hardisty, Alberta, through Minnesota and northeastern North Dakota.
It will enter the U.S. at Neche, in Pembina County, and run southeast.
The lawsuit filed Thursday in federal court in California argues that the oil extracted from the oil sands is dirty, and that refining it will release more pollutants and contribute to global warming.
Attorney Sarah Burt of Earthjustice says the State Department has failed to show how building the pipeline is in the nation`s interest. |
