UND Nickname Deadline Approaching | Video
Neil Carlson
9/29/2009
The battle over the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo is coming down to the wire. The Board of Higher Education set a deadline of Thursday to either gain tribal approval or drop the nickname.

It`s still up in the air as to whether the argument will go into overtime.

The Spirit Lake tribe at Devils Lake has approved the use of the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo.

But, UND won`t be able to keep it, unless the Standing Rock Tribe at Fort Yates also approves it.

And so far, despite an effort by some tribal members to gain approval, the Higher Ed board president says they haven`t heard anything official from the tribe yet.

Board president Rich Smith says the higher ed board will meet Thursday morning to decide whether to extend the deadline.

Meanwhile, a student group plans to protest it this week.

"It certainly affects Native American students on campus," says UND student Amber Annis. "And now we`ve just been completely taken out of the equation. And its been placed in the hands of tribal governments. No offense to tribal governments, this issue does not affect them as much as it affects us here at UND."

Standing Rock tribal chairman, Ron His Horse is Thunder declined to comment on the issue today.

However, he remained opposed to the use of the nickname at a Higher Ed board meeting, earlier this month.

A Standing Rock Tribal Secretary told us today the council has no plans to bring up the nickname issue.

However, that could change following tomorrow`s tribal election, since the current chairman has been opposed to the nickname.
