ND Regulators Set Hearing on Railroad Whistles
10/14/2009
North Dakota regulators have set a hearing to explore whether trains should be required to blow their horns at seven private, rural railroad crossings.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad officials have asked the PSC to consider a warning requirement at specific crossings at Williston, Mandan, Hebron and five other rural communities.

A new state law says the railroad or a landowner may ask the Public Service Commission to consider requiring a warning horn at selected private crossings.

Commissioner Brian Kalk says the railroad`s request will be reviewed. Kalk says he wonders about the safety at the crossings. The PSC will hold a public hearing in Bismarck on Dec. 1.
