NASA is known for its cutting-edge technology, but at the next shuttle launch, the space agency is trying something new, opening up the launch to those who twitter.
At last Friday`s sign up, spots were claimed in less than an hour, with the first hundred people getting to see Atlantis blast off up close.
When the space shuttle Atlantis lifts off in November, there will be more than media and v-i-p`s looking on.
100 lucky "tweeps" will also be on hand.
NASA opened the launch for its first ever tweet-up sign-up was on Friday, and as you can imagine, people are all, well, a-twitter.
"The registration was just open for a little bit before we filled up, and we filled up a wait-list. We have a lot of people who are really interested in coming. We`ve had a great response," said NASA spokesperson Stephanie Schierholz.
So all they have to do is tweet about the launch, and they`ll not only get to see it, they will get to talk to engineers and astronauts.
It`s NASA`s attempt to reach the masses using new technologies.
"We`re trying offer the public ways to connect with w hat their space program is doing," Schierbolz said.
And it`s not the first time the space agency has turned to twitter. On the past few shuttle missions, some of the astronauts have sent the short message bursts back from space.
It seems with just six shuttle missions left and the future of u-s space flight about to see big changes, NASA is boldly going where no tweep has gone before.
And for those lucky twitter users and their followers - it will undoubtedly be quite a trip.
