Last year`s drought hit producers in North Dakota and Montana hard, and to help make-up for their livestock losses, the government is reimbursing producers with the Livestock Forage Program, or LFP.
LFP was introduced as part of the 2008 Farm Bill. It`s an adaptation of the Livestock Compensation Program from 2006.
The amount producers will be able to receive for their losses is dependent on their livestock numbers as well as their pasture acreage.
"It`s going to rough out to about $54.00 per cow," says Corey Paryzek, the county executive director. "It`s going to be limited to their cow numbers or their pasture divided by a nine-acre per animal carrying capacity. But as far payment limits...in general, with the new farm bill, there`s different disaster programs involved and the per person limit will be up to $100,000.00."
To sign-up for LFP, producers need information on their livestock numbers for last year and need to provide their lease information. Their pasture acres must also be insured.
If you have questions about those requirements, you can call the Williams County Farm Service at 572-6729.
