Non-Profits Changing with the Times | Video
Amanda Tetlak

The business world is ever-changing.

And the state of the national economy has been behind some of the recent changes.

The University of Mary hosted a series of discussions today to talk about changes in a few areas like banking and accounting.

The United Way says nationally, donations have been down. But that`s not the case in North Dakota. People are still willing to give.

Even though North Dakotans are still generous, the United Way says the number of people needing help has dramatically increased.

"That`s why the United Way has raised the campaign goal by 14-percent," says Jena Gullo, the United Way executive director. "Because the programs we`re supporting are in need of greater help."

Which non-profits say is an obvious challenge. And one way they`re trying to combat that is by doing research to get to the root of problems and trying to solve them.

"The importance of trying to strike at the root of the problem and more than anything the kind of connectivity, there`s kind of a lack of genuine structure involved," says Wes Wakefield, of the University of Mary. "You can help people, but if it`s not done in an organized manner, it can lose its efficiency."

And non-profits say business students have a lot of entrepreneurial skills to bring to the table to find solutions and also find new ways to raise funds.

"It is so important to have a business background when you`re running a non-profit," Gullo says. "People want to know their dollars are being used wisely. That we`re really measuring outcomes. That we`re producing results."

And the students say this discussion has sharpened their sense of what should be done to make non-profits successful as the business climate changes.

Another roundtable discussion today involved our Lee Timmerman. He talked to students about how local television sports has changed over the years.
