Dakota Maid Bakery Closing | Video
Andrew Keller
10/26/2009
It`s been sending a sweet smell across Bismarck and Mandan for over 100 years but the owner says it`s time to turn the oven off. Dakota Maid Bakery has over a century of experience serving baked goods to the area. A weakened economy and a tired owner have prompted her to call it quits.
"These independent bakeries, they work hard, long hours, wonderful food. It`s part of America we`re not going to see anymore, I`m afraid," says Mary Ryckman, a customer to the bakery.

"I`ll miss them, yup, I`ll miss them a lot," says long-time customer Clarice Fode.

Fode says Halloween is here and she`s getting them while they`re hot.

"I`m really going to miss these cookies," she laughs.

She`s not the only one. Since owner Delores Urban has announced she will be closing, there`s been a few huge orders. Take the 72 dozen, or 864 cookies order. Everyone seemingly wants to get their last taste of Urban`s famous baked goods.

"The phone is ringing off the hook, everyone`s asking one more time to get the cookies," says Urban.

The Dough Angel, as some of Urban`s friends call her, took over the century-old Dakota Maid Bakery in 1992 and says 18 years later, in the midst of a tough economy, she`s tired and ready for a break. There are things she`ll miss, sure, and things that she won`t.

"I`ll miss the customers, I`ll miss some of the baking, I don`t think I`ll miss the 12 hour shifts. Around the holidays, it gets to be 14 to 16 hour days," she says.

"I understand her closing, too. There comes a time in your life where you want to do something different," admits Ryckman.

And that`s what she plans to do. After she`s closed, she says she`s going to get away. She`s going to go to Wisconsin and visit her daughter. For how long? She doesn`t even know that answer.

"Got to get everything out of here, clean everything up. Then when I get to my daughter`s, maybe sleep for a week," Urban laughs.

She says the biggest thing she`ll miss is the friends she`s met along the way. She says she had hoped to sell the business so someone could continue Dakota Maid Bakery but she says there were too many hurdles. The Dough Angel says the dough will rise for the last time on Wednesday, October 28th.
