Teacher of the Month | Video
Samantha Mehrotra
11/4/2009
We have a new teacher of the month to celebrate this November. She`s Audrey Friedt, a fourth grade teacher at Rickard Elementary.

For Audrey Friedt, teaching comes naturally.

Her passion for education came from her family, her mother was also a teacher.

"She ran a daycare and a preschool in our home while we were growing up, so I was just kind of always around education and around kids, and kind of had a natural ability with them," Friedt says.

Friedt, a native of Mott, began her career in Ashley before moving to Williston, a move which she said challenged her professionally.

"And when I moved to Williston I knew nobody," she says. "I didn`t know that first day, walking into the classroom, who my students were."

But her colleagues say she handled that transition with grace, and since her move to Rickard Elementary four years ago, she`s forged a strong connection with the students.

"The particularly wonderful thing about Ms. Friedt is that no grade level is left untouched," says fellow teacher Karie Ludlum. "She starts at kindergarten and tries to get know every single child in our school. She learns their name, she learns their interests, she comments to them every time she`s walking down the hall, so she engages them right away so that when they finally do have her for grade four, she already has build a relationship with them."

Friedt`s students value that relationship. They say while she`s nice, she challenges them everyday, no matter what the subject.

"We do this thing called a mad minute and I really like it because it challenges my multiplying," says student Macy Marquette.

And for the students who need extra help, she`s always there to lend a hand.

"She`ll talk to us and explain it more if we don`t get it," adds fourth-grader Paige Wold.

Ms. Friedt says her goal for the next year is simple - to continue to grow as an educator and to make sure her students do the same.
