| Many people are talking about the parents of the three athletes, and how courageous they`ve been through this whole experience. In the last few days, we`ve heard quite a bit from Kyrstin Gemar`s parents, particularly her father, who has been very outspoken from the beginning. But today, we`re beginning to hear from the parents of Afton Williamson and Ashley Neufeld, too. Ashley Neufeld is part of a softball family. Her mother, Bev, was recently inducted into the Manitoba Softball Hall of Fame. Ashley`s impact on the game in her hometown of Brandon will be felt for years to come. Neufeld was a standout in Manitoba before her college career at Dickinson State. A memorial scholarship fund with Softball Manitoba has already been set up throughout the province, and it`s likely some new diamonds in Brandon will be named in her honor. "That would be very honorable as fas as, I mean if Ashley was here I could see the smile on her face, so she would be thrilled," says Bev Neufeld. Jim Nay, Neufeld`s former coach, "This scholarship will keep Ashley`s name going in Manitoba for young people," says Jim Nay, who coached Neufeld for six years. "Ashley was a young person, she played all through Manitoba, through most of Canada into the states." Neufeld helped the Blue Hawks to a 42-and-5 record and a third-place finish in the Nation Tournament. |
