USS New York Arrives | Video
11/6/2009
The latest addition to the U.S. Naval fleet has docked in Manhattan.

The USS New York was named after 9/11 and contains steel from the remains of the World Trade Center.

The assault ship will be commissioned this week in its namesake city.

The USS New York paused in the waters across from the World Trade Center site for a 21 gun salute.

9/11 victims families, NYPD officers, and first responders witnessed the symbolic transformation of America`s most devastating attack into a new mission.

On board proud crewmembers, many of them with ties to the new york area.

"I think it was the best thing that could have been done with it. This ship will hopefully go on, once i`m off it, doing peacekeeping missions, humanitarian missions, and keep freedom around the world. It`s the best thing that coulda come from the steel," said one sailor.

The bow of the ship contains 7.5 tons of 9/11 steel.

"The steel that`s in the bow of the ship gives us an added sense of purpose. All of the crewmembers know it, feel it, and it really does motivate us everyday," said the ship’s commander F. Curtis Jones.

The latest assault ship in the Navy`s fleet toured the Hudson River before docking at pier 88 in Midtown for a ceremony.

The one billion dollar ship was crafted in Louisiana and the assault battleship`s gray, sleek exterior extends 684 feet.

It comes complete with a flight deck and transport space below.

And although it was commissioned to be built before the 9/11 attacks, the ship now bears the city`s namesake and carries with it so much more.
