Bail has been set at a million dollars for the Oklahoma man accused of beating a Fargo dentist to death with a hammer.
Michael Nakvinda appeared in Cass county court for the first time today.
He`s charged with murder, robbery, burglary and theft in the death of Philip Gattuso.
Nakvinda was brought in from Oklahoma last night.
But the man prosecutors say hired him is fighting extradition.
They`re going through legal channels to bring Gene Kirkpatrick to North Dakota to face conspiracy charges, and they wanted a high bail to make sure Nakvinda isn`t released.
"The reason for that is that he has no ties to North Dakota, he`s facing life behind bars with no parole, and we have reason to believe he would try to escape and perhaps resort to violence to perfect that escape and during the recapture thereafter," says Birch Burdick, the Cass County state`s attorney.
Prosecutors say Kirkpatrick did not like the way his son-in-law Gattuso was raising his granddaughter after her mother died.
