North Dakotans paid tribute to veterans at a gathering around a state Capitol memorial that shines on Veterans Day.
The globe in the center of the memorial is designed so the sun shines on North Dakota on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
Benjamin Brandt, a VFW junior vice commander in Bismarck, said Armistice Day began on Nov. 11, 1918, to mark the end of World War I, with the hope that it would be the end of all wars.
At United Tribes Technical College, students came to the college medicine wheel for an offering of prayers and tobacco to recognize veterans` sacrifices.
More than 100 people met on the Veterans Memorial Bridge between Fargo and Moorhead, Minn. Many of them carried American flags.
Members of the North Dakota American Legion talked about the group`s Courage Carries On campaign to help soldiers who suffer from stress or depression. |
