The older we get, the more we learn to appreciate what our men and women in uniform do to preserve our freedoms. But it doesn`t always require age and experience before a patriotic message sinks in. Students from St. Mary`s High School in Bismarck honored veterans this morning. The moving ceremony really opened students` eyes to the sacrifices made by friends and neighbors. The mood was somber as North Dakota soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan were named. Some on the list were from the Bismarck area, and known to many in attendance.
"It made me remember everything that they have been through, everything they`ve done for our country," said Jordyn Fischer, a St. Mary`s student.
Veterans of past wars were also recognized.
"It tells me that people appreciate my time in the Army, and it is a special day for me," said Vietnam Veteran Dan Chausee.
Students were really struck by Lt. Col. Rick Smith`s words. The National Guard soldier and 1985 St. Mary`s graduate served in Iraq. He highlighted the difficult issues soldiers face in war, and even challenged the students.
"Make a difference in someone`s life each day; Be the best person you can be each day; And choose the right attitudes," said Smith.
His words struck a chord with students.
"The message that he got across to us was very inspirational," said Kylan Stecher, a St. Mary`s student.
The older veterans who took part in today`s ceremony say they couldn`t be any more proud that so many young people expressed gratitude for their service.
