Soup Kitchens Seeing More Need | Video
11/13/2009
At 11:30, most people are at work, but others have no place to go but soup kitchens.

For the past 28 years, the soup kitchen at First Lutheran Church in Minot has welcomed those who need a hot meal.

"We had abuot 2 people the first day we started," says Virginia Minette, Volunteer.

And these volunteers have seen that number steadily grow.

"We`ve had as many as 80 one day," says Minette.

"It helps out alot," says Duane Bachmeier, Minot.

Bachmeier says he`s out of work because of a nervous disorder.

"I like coming down, it`s just like going to a restaurant," says Bachmeier.

"We`ve been given a number of items," says Minette.

Thanks to volunteers and donations this kitchen has been able to keep serving.

"We run a note in the bulletin if we run short," says Minette.

"People don`t believe there is homelessness in our community," says Mac McLeod, Director of the Minot Area Homeless Coalition.

McLeod says when people don`t notice the homeless, it`s easy to think the need isn`t there.

"Our two busiest months our November and December," says McLeod.

McLeod says volunteers have served more than 3,900 people this year.

"One person can make a difference," says McLeod.

And sometimes, it`s the soup kitchen that needs a helping hand just to keep going.
