Traffic fatalities in North Dakota are on the rise, and lives could have been saved if people had taken the right precautions.
Of the 125 people killed on state highways this year, 74 were not wearing their seat belts.
Traffic activity is expected to increase as we head into Thanksgiving next week, and Community Action wants to remind travelers to fasten their seat belts.
"Right now in Williams County, actually in the entire region, Williams, McKenzie, and Divide County, we`re seeing a lot more traffic than what we`re used to," says Penny Soiseth, the Safe Communities coordinator. "With that we`re seeing our fatality numbers and our traffic crashes, those numbers are increasing dramatically this year. One of the things we`re seeing is that people are not buckling up. And what we want to say this holiday season is to make sure you buckle up. We want to get you to your destination safely, and back home safely."
If you choose not to wear a seat belt, and you get caught by the Highway Patrol, it could cost you. The penalty is $20 for a seat-belt violation and $25 if your child is not wearing a restraint.
