11/23/2009
North Dakota judges have picked Gerald VandeWalle for another five years as the state`s chief justice.

VandeWalle was re-elected unanimously on Monday at a meeting of the North Dakota Judicial Conference in Bismarck. The chief justice is elected by the state`s district judges and Supreme Court justices.

VandeWalle, 76, has served as chief justice since January 1993. He was first elected when his predecessor, Ralph Erickstad, retired from the Supreme Court.

Gov. Arthur Link appointed VandeWalle to the Supreme Court in August 1978. VandeWalle had served previously as an assistant attorney general and deputy attorney general.
