DSU Newspaper to Return | Video

The Dickinson State University campus is a busy place, but not even the students and faculty know everything that`s going on. That`s because there`s been a news blackout of sorts. The school didn`t have the necessary staff to publish a newspaper, so it folded a few years ago. But everything is now back in place. DSU is once again preparing to go to press.

Journalism is back here on the campus of Dickinson State University, with the return of the school newspaper. Seniors Eli Turnbough and Jaylea Lemke like to catch up on the news in between class, and they can`t wait to get their hands on the first edition of the DSU Chronicle.

"There`s so much that goes on on campus, and you have no idea what`s happening, and you don`t know the inside story. If something takes takes place across campus, you don`t really know what was going on, so, it`s good to have an insight, and a way to communicate to students what is happening," said Turnbough.

Administrators recently brought in Dave Schreindl to jump-start and oversee the student-run paper, which hasn`t been printed for several years.

"We want to be a voice for the students, and really to be a, for years to come, to be the place that people go to turn to to get their information about the campus," said Schreindl, a communications instructor with DSU.

DSU halted the paper in 2003 because it was difficult to find instructors, but last year some motivated faculty members, including Professor Dave Solheim, were determined to bring the paper back and make it work.

"There was enough activity last year where I think it motivated Dr. Church and the administration to support a position in journalism, and the will to support a student publication," said Solheim.

The first edition is set to go to print in February. DSU`s paper has plenty of photographers on staff, but they`re looking for good writers to join the team.
