Tornado Recovery Efforts | Video
Brian Howell
11/25/2009
It`s been a tough year for Dickinson residents, but those who survived the devastating tornado this past summer say they have a lot to be thankful for.

You can still see the scars from last July`s tornado in Dickinson. The twister left behind a path destruction, and while the damage to buildings can be fixed. The memory of that horrible night will live on in the minds of the storm`s victims.

But progress continues, and Congressman Earl Pomeroy met with Dickinson residents and local leaders Tuesday night, to see how things are coming along since being clobbered by the tornado.

Some residents at the meeting expressed disgust with the way insurance companies are handling their claims.

Jerry Gayda is one of those people. He says the tornado damaged his roof, and now he`s going to litigation with his insurance company.

"I`ve got my own construction people to look at it, I`ve got my own engineer to look at it, and the insurance company is just saying, well, their engineer looked at it and he said it can be repaired, and mine said it can`t," says Gayda.

Despite some individual problems, overall, both the mayor and the congressman are pleased with the outcome.

"For the kind of devastation that this tornado brought, no lives were lost, more than 2,000 insurance claims filed, the North Dakota Insurance Department tonight reports that only 10 were actually brought formally to the Insurance Department," says Pomeroy. "That means really a Grade A effort, in terms of getting claims resolved and resolved acceptably."

While some wounds are still visible, others have healed quickly and many in town say it`s thanks to help from FEMA.

Because of major flood issues in North Dakota at the time, FEMA personnel were able to quickly respond to the tornado, and get Dickinson back on its feet.

City leaders say there are still some minor discrepancies with FEMA over how much money the city will receive for recovery assistance.
