Once Thanksgiving is under our belts, it`s time to turn our attention to holiday shopping. And your shopping choices could affect how much money you dish out on property taxes.
That`s because communities rely on the money raised from sales tax to help offset property taxes and pay for other projects, like roads in the community.
If you shop online this holiday season from a company based outside your area, the city doesn`t get any sales tax.
Mandan`s business development director says, in a worst case scenario, if sales tax revenue were to drop significantly in a city, property taxes might have to be raised, or the budget and projects would have to be cut.
And of course, shopping inside your community can have very good effects on many other things, too.
"Those businesses are what create jobs here, and so there`s a very positive economic impact, as well as they`re very often the ones supporting our hometown athletics, community events, all kinds of charitable organizations with our communities," says Mandan Business Development Director Ellen Huber.
Huber says if you can`t shop locally, at least try to shop within North Dakota, so that the state benefits as a whole.
