Former State Official Dies
12/15/2009
A former longtime chairman of the North Dakota House Education Committee has died. Kenneth Knudson was 82. He had been living at St. Luke`s Home in Dickinson for 13 years. Knudson`s funeral is scheduled at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Taylor Lutheran Church in the Stark County community of Taylor. Knudson, a Republican, represented part of rural southwestern North Dakota during 22 years in the Legislature. He was a teacher and high school principal. Knudson was first elected to the House in 1966, and he served as vice chairman of the House Education Committee during his first session in 1967. He was named the committee`s chairman in 1971, and held the position for seven sessions of the Legislature. Knudson also played a pivotal role in legislative debates over the coal severance tax in the mid-1970s. During the 1977 session, when the House was split 50-50 among Republicans and Democrats, Knudson was willing to support Democratic positions on the structure of the severance tax. Knudson left the House after the 1987 session, returning to his home town of Taylor to farm and ranch.
