Kevin Lawrence
12/24/2009
1:30 p.m. winter weather update.

Late this Thursday morning, most of North Dakota was experiencing a lull in the storm. However, the second wave of the storm will move in tonight and continue through Christmas Day and into Saturday with heavy snow and gusty winds causing blizzard conditions.

Yesterday and last night 2 to 5 inches of snow fell across western and central North Dakota. Gusty winds kicked in and caused travel problems with blowing and drifting snow. Snow had tapered off in the west and winds of 5 to 15 mph are expected for the rest of this afternoon from Williston to Bowman. In central North Dakota, additional light accumulations of an inch or less are expected from Minot to Jamestown this afternoon with northwest winds of 15 to 25 mph.

By midnight tonight, conditions will worsen once again as snow redevelops and winds increase. This harsh winter weather will then continue through Christmas Day and Saturday. As blizzard conditions and heavy snow develop. Total snowfall accumulations through Saturday are expected to range from 12 to 18 inches from Rugby to Harvey, Jamestown and Oakes. Ten to 15 inches are expected from Minot through Bismarck to Fort Yates. Snowfall accumulations in the west are expected to be from 6 to 10 inches from Bowbells through Dickinson and Hettinger, and 2 to 6 inches from Williston to Bowman. Motorists and holiday travelers are urged to stay informed with the latest information and forecasts.

Conditions will improve by saturday night.
