Reclaimed Land Going Private
North Dakota regulators say more reclaimed coal mine land is going back into private hands. Coal companies must post bonds to make sure they pay reclamation costs for land that`s been used for mining. Often the land is kept under bond long after the reclamation is done. That keeps the property from being used for farming or pasture land.
Public Service Commission Chairman Kevin Cramer says last year, more than 4,600 acres of reclaimed land was released from its bond coverage. That`s almost one-quarter of the amount of land that`s been released since 1970. Cramer says all of the reclaimed property at former coal mines near Dickinson, Noonan and Hettinger had their bond coverage lifted last year.
