| Nursing students spend hours in classrooms and clinicals, learning everything from listening to lung sounds, to how to insert an IV. But there`s more to medical care, and Medcenter One College of Nursing is just one school that teaches its future nurses how to treat the entire person, not just the ailment. "When you get a diagnosis like cancer, it`s not just a physical complaint. It`s going to affect you mentally and emotionally as well. Just making sure those bases are covered. That`s a nurse`s job as well," said Naturopathic Doctor Faye Johnson. Speakers at the workshop ranged from pediatricians and nurses to massage therapists and dog trainers, and presentations included yoga, prayer and aromatherapy. "It`s more listening to other professionals and how they incorporate humor into their care for their patients or maybe incorporate massage or music or whatever therapy. Something in addition to the medicine that they`re given which of course is important, however it`s not the only thing we can offer our patients," said Registered Nurse Tammy Buchholz. The workshop is an extension to an alternative medicines and therapies course offered at Medcenter One College of Nursing. "I love this. I think it`s wonderful. It`s going to give me so much more knowledge on how to treat my patient," said student Kayla Messer. Part two of the workshop will take place tomorrow from 9:00 a.m. til noon. Everyone is invited.
