If you have ever talked in your sleep, you`re not alone.
"Mostly it`s younger people that do this, but it can continue into adulthood. Parasomnias, sleep talking, is one that can occur with anyone and usually it doesn`t cause any problems," said Medcenter One Sleep Center Director Nikki Mills.
Why do we do it?
"People that are more stressed, it has a tendancy to occur more often, like confusional arousal, sleep talking," Mills said.
Do I talk in my sleep? I downloaded an app to find out.
The app, Sleep Talk, monitors sound all night and only records noises that are louder than usual. You can also set your recording sensitivity and a timer. Once I got the settings calibrated to where I wanted them. I just plug my phone in, so the battery doesn`t die, and I put it within three feet of where I`m sleeping. The app takes care of the rest.
I used Sleep Talk for two weeks and it picked up a few things. Mostly snoring. But it did record me saying...something.
It sounded like nonsense. I played it for Mills to find out. Even though it sounded strange, she said it was something I shouldn`t be concerned with.
However, if you are having problems it might not be a bad idea to get checked out.
"Especially if you have good sleep hygenie. If you are sleeping seven, eight hours a night and you`re still tired," Mills said.
For now, I`m going to sleep tight and speak up.
Mills adds that these sleep apps shouldn`t be used to diagnose problems. If you think you have a sleep disorder, consult a physician. Kevin?
