Mandan Apartment Fire | Video

Alex Hagan/Jessica Roose | 6/27/2012

An apartment complex in southeast Mandan was severely damaged Wednesday afternoon when a fire from one unit spread to the attic. A spokesman for the Mandan Fire Department, Battalion Chief Mitch Bitz, said a passerby noticed the fire shortly before one this afternoon and called it in.

It took about an hour to get the fire under control.

He said everyone was able to get out of the complex safely.

"The second floor, two of the apartments suffered water damage and smoke damage. The main floor, all four apartments suffered quite a bit of water damage. Two of the apartments in the upstairs are completely destroyed."

All units from Mandan and one from Bismarck responded to the fire.

Two firefighters were taken to the hospital to be treated for heat exhaustion.

The Red Cross is providing food, clothing and shelter to approximately 20 people who were living in the complex.
