UTTC Revives Welding Program | Video

Kristin Clouston | 7/6/2012

The welding industry is hotter than ever! There is a high demand for welders and companies are willing to pay big bucks for people who can do the job. That`s why one college has decided to revive a program that hasn`t been in operation since the 1990`s.

Welding was once a popular program at United Tribes Technical College and it`s coming back thanks to funding from the U.S. Department of Labor.

The school is renovating its shop and will include state of the art welding simulators. Those who are interested in getting into the program need to act now, because only 12 applicants are going to get in, and they`re going to have to interview for their spots.

"Somebody that`s really serious about their career and has set goals to become a welder and take it to another level of becoming a union member. Whether it be iron workers, pipe fitters, boiler makers. That`s what we`re looking for, is somebody that`s serious and that is gonna see it through," said program director Steve Shepherd.

Once they complete the course students can apply for an apprenticeship with one of the building trade unions. The program will also help place students in their field of choice. The first training session will start sometime around the end of September or the beginning of October.
