Free Watermelon Day | Video

Michelle San Miguel | 7/8/2012

People in Mandan are celebrating the city`s railroad history. Hundreds of people turned out for the annual Watermelon Day at the state`s railroad museum. With temperatures reaching close to 90 degrees Sunday, refreshing watermelons seemed to do the trick for children.

They also got a chance to see some of the museum`s new exhibits, including an 1890 steele depot and a switcher diesel engine.

"People just need something to do with their kids and this is a great place for them. They get an opportunity to go on the cabooses. They get to see the different exhibits," said Bill Engelter, president of the board of the state`s railroad museum.

"It`s really fun here because we get to go on the trains and we get to ride the train," said six-year-old Mason Strinbu, who was visiting from Colorado.

Visitors also had the chance to ride around in a mini-train and tour the sites of the museum.
