After twelve years of service to the North Dakota National Guard 81st civil support team, Lieutenant Colonel Larry Shireley retired today and passed on his command. Shireley has served with the North Dakota National Guard civil support team since 2000. He was the unit`s first commander and says the last 12 years have been a rewarding experience.

"The first part was getting a new team, forming a new team and having it excel the way it did, with the people we had it in the team. I think that was the most exciting part."

As commander he was responsible for leading the unit which works to support civil authorities with any domestic emergencies the state may have. Now he passes that responsibility on to the new commander, Lt. Col Mark Quire during a symbolic military ceremony.

"Historically you follow the flag in battle and so today we still have flags, not necessarily to carry into battle but the symbology is still there," said Col. Mike Aberle.

Quire has served as the team`s executive officer since 2008 and says he is excited to take over and get to work.

"To keep the team on the path that it`s on. Just to continually improve our mission capabilities, to keep moving on the path that we`re already on."

Quire`s career has also included service in the US Army and the Florida Army National Guard.

Shireley says he plans to work with the God`s Child project to help organize and expand medical teams.
