More Potatoes Planted in ND

According to the USDA, potato acreage planted in North Dakota for 2012 is estimated at 88,000 acres, up from 84,000 acres in 2011. Area for harvest is forecast at 84,000 acres compared to 77,000 acres last year.

Potato planting was virtually complete by May 27, well ahead of both last year and the five-year average.
Russets account for 42 percent of the total acreage, up from 39 percent last year. Whites, at 34 percent, are down from 35 percent in 2011. Reds account for 23 percent of the total, down from 25 percent last year. Yellows account for 1 percent of the total acreage, the same level as 2011.
