Golf Tournament Raises Awareness of Suicide Prevention | Video

Michelle San Miguel | 7/12/2012

Suicide is the ninth leading cause of death in North Dakota. In 2010, 103 people lost their lives to suicide. On Thursday, a golf tournament was held at the Apple Creek Country Club to raise awareness of suicide prevention.

The Kurt Schreiner Memorial Golf Tournament is named after a North Dakotan who died by suicide.

"I am hoping that this raises awareness, reduces some stigma. We had some wonderful people in the community. again, that wrote stories of people that they lost to suicide. So we`ve printed those up, and people as they`re walking around the silent auction tonight, can read the stories and really see that these folks were people that lost lives, and not just facts and statistics," said Micki Savelkoul, who lost two relatives to suicide.

Eighty golfers competed in the event. The money raised at the tournament is being donated to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

If you or someone you know is considering suicide, you`re encouraged to call the suicide hotline at 1-800-273-8255.
